The College of Life Sciences of South-CentralUniversity for Nationalities was developed from biochemistry major founded in1988 and formally established in 2004. After 15 years of construction anddevelopment, a pattern of both science and engineering and both undergraduateand postgraduate training has been formed. The college now has 4 undergraduatemajors, including Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Biopharmaceutical, Food Qualityand Safety, and 1 experimental class, Biological breeding. The college has twofirst-class master's degree programs in Biology and Bioengineering, and becomesthe construction unit of doctoral program in Biology.

Atpresent, the college has 74 faculty members, including 64 full-time teachers,20 professors (2 second level professors, 4 third level professors), 20associate professors, 5 doctoral supervisors, 37 master's supervisors, 55teachers with doctorate and 40 teachers with overseas study and workexperience. Thecollege has more than 1000 undergraduates and postgraduates. The college alwaysadheres to the guidance of talent demand, optimizes the professional talenttraining program, implements the concept of all staff education, all processeducation and all-round education, highlights the central position of talenttraining, and successively implements new training models such as young eagleflying action plan, excellent engineer talent plan, dual tutor system and newengineering talent training certification. Thecollege has a comprehensive experimental building with a building area ofnearly 20000 square meters. It has a number of teaching and researchinstitutions: Key Laboratory for Biotechnology of the State Ethnic AffairsCommission, Hubei Provincial Key laboratory for Protection and Application of SpecialPlant Germplasm in Wuling Area of China, Hubei Provincial Engineering andTechnology Research Center for Resources and Utilization of Microbiology, HubeiProvincial Biology Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and a number ofprovincial-level technology research and development centers jointly built by universityand enterprises. In recent years, the college has undertaken and participatedin more than 150 projects, including 863 Program, 973 Program,Special foundation for State Major Basic Research Program, National NaturalScience Fund, provincial (ministerial) Natural Science Funds, Wuhan Science andTechnology Plan, etc. It has established long-term research cooperation withmany universities in US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, South Korea, Japan andFinland. The college has long been committed to serving the economic and socialconstruction of ethnic minorities and regions, providing technical consultationand assistance to governments, enterprises and institutions in ethnic regions,and maintaining a good cooperative development relationship of the government,industry, university and research institute.
