The School of Economics, one of the schools in South-Central University for Nationalities with large scale and distinctive features of teaching units, was merged by some parts of the former Department of Economics & Management and Department of Finance. The school has five undergraduate majors, which are Economics, International Economy and Trade, Finance, Insurance and Finance Engineering, where Economics is undergraduate brand major and Western Economics is Excellent Course in Hubei. The school has the PhD of Chinese Minorities and a First-tier Master’s Degree Program in Theoretical Economics (including five Second-tier Master’s Degree Programs--Chinese Minorities Economics, Western Economics, Political Economics, World Economics, Population, Resources and Environmental Economics etc.), Master of Regional Economics and Master of Agricultural Extension. In addition, The Chinese Minorities Economics is the key discipline in Hubei Province.
Our School has a provincial key laboratory(Research and Development of Agricultural Information Technology Laboratory between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission), two institutes( Economics、Chinese Minorities Economics), three integrated laboratories in economics. The school has more 3010 undergraduates, ranking the first place in the university. In addition, there are 170 Doctors and Masters totally. We have 86 professional teachers, including 11 professors, 31 associate professors, 1 across-Century backbone teachers in Hubei, 2 middle-aged and young experts with outstanding contributions in Hubei and 4 academic leaders in the university; Moreover, there are 43 teachers who get the PhD, including 11 people who are PhD Candidates and 93% of the teachers have Master degree at least. Our school still engages a number of guest professors, and often invites domestic and foreign experts and scholars to come to our school to give lectures. During recent three years, our school has undertaken nearly 20 provincial and ministerial research projects, published more than 400 papers, issued 15 academic monographs and compiled 4 books(including textbooks), obtained more than 10 research awards in the provincial level or above, one Excellent Textbook Award in the provincial level or above and eight other awards.
In order to promote economic and social development of the ethnic minority areas and train high-level expert for ethnic minority areas, our school proposed the education orientation--Be in Central South, Serve the society, Cater to the country, Strive for excellence. We also insist our direction of professional development and personnel training--Broaden the profession, Strengthen the foundation, Improve the quality, Develop in all-round. Based on undergraduate education, our school reinforces graduate teaching through continuous efforts and developments. The school of Economics actively implements bilingual teaching on some major courses, including Financial English, Economic English, Foreign Trading English and Insurance English. Among our previous undergraduates, the passing rate of CET Band 4 and Band 6 is above 90% and 45% respectively, ranking the forefront of non-English majors in South-Central University for Nationalities.
The school focuses on the ideological and political work and cultivation of students ' comprehensive quality, and it achieves a great deal: In 2009, our school won the title of Advanced Collective on ideological and political work of Hubei Province, the Class Three of grade 2005 in Major International Economic and Trade was awarded the title of Advanced class collective model in Hubei and National Advanced class collective. In order to enhance the practical ability and employability of students, our school actively contacts with banks, securities, insurance companies and other units to provide plenty of summer internships for our students. This large-scale organization of internships in Colleges of Liberal Arts makes a larger promotion of the students' abilities and comprehensive quality, and our one-time employment rate of graduates in all majors is more than 90%. In 2009 and 2010, the School of Economics won the title of “Winning Unit of the School Undergraduates' Employment” in a row.
