The School of Economics of the South-Central Minzu University, originally named Department of Economics and Management, was founded in 1984. The School was combined with part of majors of Department of Finance and the former Department of Economics and Management and officially renamed the School of Economics in 1999. Now, it has developed into a teaching unit with large scale of teachers and students, strong comprehensive strength and distinctive features.
The School is run with clear direction. It adheres to the motto of “Faithfulness, Learning, Harmony, Generosity” of SCUN, emphasizes the creation of a strong sense of the Chinese national community, implements the philosophy of “Diligent in Learning and Committed to Benefit People”, focuses on high-quality economics education, fulfills the fundamental task of morality education, fosters highly qualified, inter-disciplinary talents who are not only understand economics but also have the feelings of nation and country. It persists in centering on the teachers and students, following the rules of higher education, promoting the teaching and scientific research coordinately, developing reform and stability together, comprehensively administering the Party strictly, with discipline construction as the leader, team building as the foundation, scientific management as the guarantee, and talent training as the goal, in order to push the School’s sustainable and healthy development of various undertaking and realize the transformation from a big school to a strong school.
The School has a complete range of disciplines. It has six undergraduate majors which are Economics, International Economy and Trade, Finance, Insurance, Finance Engineering and Economic Statistics. Economics, Finance, International Economics and Trade are listed as provincial first-class undergraduate majors. The School also has a doctoral degree program and a master degree program of Chinese Ethnic Economics, and a first-level discipline master degree program of Theoretical Economics consisting of four second-level discipline master degree Programs (Political Economics; Development Economics, World Economy and Population, Resources and Environmental Economics), a first-level discipline master program of Applied Economics consisting of three second-level discipline master degree program (Industrial Economics, Regional Economics, and Finance), a master degree program of Finance and a master degree program of Rural & Regional Development. Chinese Ethnic Economics is a key discipline of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and Hubei Province, and the Applied Economics has been selected as a key construction discipline of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission.
The School has excellent teaching staff. It has 109 faculties, 93 of them are full-time teachers including 22 professors, 38 associate professors, 69 doctors, 5 doctoral supervisors and 46 master supervisors. In the past five years, teachers of the School have been approved 2 major projects of National Social Science Foundation, 1 major key project of the Ministry of Education, 2 key projects of the National Social Science Fund, 17 general projects and youth projects of the National Social Science Fund, and 76 provincial and ministerial projects. They have published 37 monographs and more than 210 papers in CSSCI journals. The School has 5 national fund application workshops, 8 university-school research teams, and 5 provincial and ministerial research platforms, playing an important role of incubation radiation and demonstrating leading in talent cultivation, scientific research, social service, cultural inheritance and innovation, and international exchanges and cooperation.
The School has advanced educational concept. It sets up 3 experimental classes (pilot classes) in Economics, Finance, International Economics and Trade, and carries out the innovative talent training mode driven by “Six-one” project and “Double tutorial system” which combine the and practice. It also speeds up the bilingual education and teaching some courses in English. Well-known experts at home and abroad, government officials, corporate executives and outstanding alumni are often invited to give special guidance reports for the students, and they are employed as part-time tutors for undergraduate and graduate students. The School has signed cooperation agreements with banks, securities, insurance and other institutions to improve students’ comprehensive quality. It also regularly recommends outstanding undergraduates and postgraduates to famous universities at home and abroad for exchange and study, establishes a long-term mechanism of joint talent training with universities at home and abroad. It has been selected as a member of “Financial Education Gold Course Alliance of Chinese Universities”.
The School has high qualified students. It is the teaching unit with the largest number of students in the SCUN, and also the one with the highest admission score of university entrance examination of Humanities and Social Sciences in the SCUN. At present, there are more than 2700 undergraduate students, master’s students and doctoral students, accounting for about one tenth of the total number of students in the university. Students have made great achievements in the national “Challenge Cup”, “Chuang Youth Cup”, “Internet+” and other innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, as well as the campus “Gongqing Cup”, “Nanhu Cup” and other cultural and sport activities. The School insists on holding special brand activities close to students, reality and life, such as “Style Cup” and “Jingying Cup”, and carries out educational activities of ethnic unity and progress with the main content of “Helping each other while living together” plan and “Progressing together while studying together” plan, so as to serve students’ growth and development. Our students with solid professional foundation, high level of foreign language, broad vision and comprehensive quality are the ideal choice for employers to recruit talents.
The School’s Party building work is solid. The Party Committee of the School consists of 7 teaching staff Party branches and 7 student Party branches, with 82 teaching staff members and more than 300 students. It insists on Xi Jingping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as guidance, fully implements the general requirements for the Party building and the Party’s organizational line for the new era, constantly strengthens the leadership of the Party to the work of the School, innovates the contents of learning and education methods, consolidates the foundation of grassroots Party building work, builds high-quality leadership, creates a clean and upright political ecology, gives full play to the political leading role of the School Party Committee, the fighting for role of the branch, the vanguard and exemplary role of party members.
