Research Profile
● Overview
My research expertise is to combine the massive chemical diversity and biological relevance of natural products with the power of high sensitive screening to expedite the search for biologically active compounds that could form the basis for new therapeutic agents. My research group also investigates traditional Chinese Medicines (TCMs) and traditional Chinese Ethnic Medicines (TCEMs) where we look at (1) bioactive natural products from the herbal medicines (2) the relationship of the biological activities of different structural classes (3) the synergistic effect of the different components of the herbal medicines.
My research platform includes (1) primary bioassay screenings of natural product library; (2) activity confirmation by retest and secondary assays; (3) the active fractions/crude extracts are analysed by LC-MS or off-line LC-NMR for potential molecular ions and dereplication by search in the databases; (4) large scale isolation by bioassay-guided or mass-guided protocols, and structural elucidation of pure compounds by NMR and MS; (5) activity evaluation of the pure compounds and lead identification; (6) validating the potential antidiabetic or antitumor effects of pure natural products in vitro and in vivo; (7) Elucidating the potential mechanism of active natural products.
